I used to just dump frozen fries in the basket, but my air fryer started smoking after 5 minutes
Turns out you gotta shake the basket a couple times, otherwise the oil pools and burns. Anyone else have a close call like that?

Shaking it is definitely the way to go. Not just for fries either, anything with a coating or oil on it needs a good shake halfway through. The air fryer moves air around but it doesn't stir things for you. If you don't shake it, all that oil just sits at the bottom of the basket where it gets way too hot. It's not just a little smell either, that smoke can set off your fire alarm or worse. Barbarar32, opening a window helps but the real issue is that burnt oil can leave a bad taste on your food for the next few uses. Best to just avoid the smoke entirely by giving the basket a quick shake.

Had that happen once... just opened a window and it cleared up fast. Not sure it's a huge deal unless you're really letting it go.

Wait, you have to shake it? I always thought the air just moved around on its own. That explains the weird smell last time I made tater tots.
