Fuel smell in the cabin fixed with a coffee filter of all things

Hummingbird Aviation down in Fort Myers, we had a Mooney coming in twice a month with a faint fuel odor in the cockpit. Swapped seals, checked the vent lines, even flew it myself to try and sniff out the source. Turned out the previous guy had over-torqued the aux fuel pump gasket and it was seeping just enough to smell when the cabin heat was on. I cut a coffee filter to the gasket shape, soaked it in a little leak detector fluid, and used it as a telltale around the pump base while it ran. Found the exact drip track in ten minutes flat. Has anyone else used a cheap visual aid like that to trace an intermittent smell, or am I the only one who thinks like a barista when the AN fittings are clean?
