TIL I had been torqueing lugs to the wrong spec for 2 years on one fleet
About 3 months ago I was doing a tire change on a King Air 200 in our hangar in Boise and something felt off with the torque wrench on the last nut. It clicked way early, real soft, not the usual snap. I grabbed the logbook to double check the spec and that's when my stomach dropped. I had been using 140 inch pounds on those main gear lugs ever since I got signed off on that airframe, but the manual for our serial number range says 190. I stood there for a minute just staring at it. I went back through my own sign offs for the past 2 years and counted 11 tire changes where I used the low number. I told my lead right away, he pulled the AD and the manual, we called the operator that night, and they grounded the plane until an inspector signed off on a re-torque. Turns out 140 was the old number from a superseded manual page that somebody left in the binder as a bookmark. Nobody yelled at me but I felt sick for a solid week. Now I want to know, does your shop have a way to catch stale spec pages in the binders or is it just whoever is signed off that day to notice?
