I was at my great uncle's funeral in a tiny Baptist church. They started talking about him winning the county fair pie contest three years in a row. I was stifling a laugh because I remembered he used store-bought crusts. My cousin elbowed me and whispered "you don't show emotions like that here." That's when I realized in that culture you keep a straight face no matter what. Anybody else ever laugh at the wrong moment in a serious setting?

Vent: Builder swapped materials halfway through and the finished product looks nothing like the plans

We signed on with a custom home builder in Austin last spring for a 1,500 square foot addition. The plans showed clear cedar siding and real hardwood floors. By the time they finished in December, they had used some cheap composite board and laminate that looks like plastic. I asked the project manager why they changed and he just said 'supply chain issues' with a shrug. The before and after is night and day, but not in a good way. The house we designed feels totally different from what we got. They pocketed the price difference too since they never adjusted the contract. Anyone else have a builder pull a bait and switch like this on materials?

After about 3 months I hit exactly 50 articles saved. That number surprised me because I thought maybe 10 or 15 would be the max. The thing is each one had a different reason for being pulled. Some were copyright claims from developers who didn't like bad press. Others were just deleted after a new editor took over and wanted fresh content. It made me wonder how many stories vanish without anyone noticing. Do you track how many blocked pieces you come across in a month? Has anyone else compared notes on the reasons they see most often?

Question about down vs synthetic bags in wet conditions

I tested a 650 fill down bag against a synthetic one on a 4 day trip in Olympic National Park with rain every day. The synthetic bag stayed warm even when damp, the down bag turned into a wet mess by night three. Am I missing something with treating down, or is synthetic just the way to go for PNW trips?

PSA: Stop clamping boards with the cup side down

I spent 3 years wondering why my glue-ups kept having gaps on one end. It drove me NUTS. Finally an old timer at a jobsite in Eugene pointed out my boards were cupped and I was clamping them the wrong direction. The cup should face UP so the clamps pull the edges flat. Now I check every board with a straightedge before I even reach for the glue. Has anyone else fought with this for way too long before figuring it out?
