Am I the only one who started seeing panel locations differently after a bad crawlspace day in Tulsa?
Last Tuesday I spent 4 hours under a house in Tulsa because the panel was mounted on the far wall from where the phone line came in, and I had to run every zone wire through a 14 inch gap between joists. I was covered in insulation and mad at myself because I picked that spot 3 years ago on the original install. Somewhere around the 12th staple I realized I have been placing panels where they look clean instead of where the wire actually wants to go, which is backwards. The next day I moved a panel 6 feet closer to the utility entry on a different job and the whole rough-in took me an hour and 40 minutes instead of my usual 3 hours. I keep thinking about all the other panels I mounted the pretty way and how much time I cost myself down the road. Does anyone else pick panel spots based on wire runs first, or am I late to this?
Four hours in a Tulsa crawlspace with a 14 inch gap between joists sounds like my own personal nightmare. I cannot believe you picked that spot yourself three years ago and then had to go back under there and deal with it. That is a special kind of pain, going back to fix your own bad call while covered in insulation. The part that really gets me is the 12th staple, because that is about the point where you start having a full conversation with yourself down there. Cutting your rough-in from 3 hours down to an hour and 40 just by moving the panel 6 feet closer to the utility entry says everything. Wire runs first, looks second, every single time.
