Blew $300 on a used paint booth filter upgrade, now my clear coats look better than my last 2 jobs in Portland

The old filter was letting dust into every finish and I kept sanding out nibs, so I swapped it for a 3 stage setup last month and the difference is night and day, has anyone else tried stacking prefilters instead of buying the expensive OEM replacement?

Guest lecturer got disinvited for a joke about the dean's cat

Back in 2004 at UMass, a visiting professor was set to give a talk about media bias, but the school pulled the invitation after he made a dumb joke about the dean's cat at a pre-talk dinner. Nobody even heard the actual lecture, it was all about that one offhand line. Anyone else see speakers get canned over stuff that had nothing to do with their topic?

PVA vs wheat paste for spines, my 2 month switch test

I got sick of spines cracking on my practice journals so I started testing PVA only on one set and wheat paste only on another, same paper and cover board. After about 60 days, the wheat paste copies rounded way nicer and held their shape better, but the PVA ones opened flatter for reading. I kept a log of hinge failures and the PVA had zero while the wheat paste had 2 that needed glue touch ups. My buddy says I'm overthinking it and should just use PVA for everything, but I like the natural feel of wheat paste for smaller books. Anyone else run a side by side like this, or do you pick based on the project size instead? What's your gut call when both bindings feel good at the start?

Talking to my landlord changed my whole approach to caulking

My landlord stopped by last Tuesday to check a leak in the bathroom and he mentioned he's been using silicone caulk with a 25 year rating for the last decade. I always just grabbed the cheap $4 tube from the hardware store, never thought about the lifespan difference. He said it's saved him from redoing bathrooms every 2 or 3 years, and honestly the extra $6 per tube feels worth it now. Has anyone else switched to the higher rated stuff and noticed it actually holds up better?

Overheard a young guy rip on my tape measure setup, made me rethink 20 years

Was on a remodel job last Tuesday over in Arlington and this kid, maybe 22, looked at my belt and laughed. Said I was carrying 3 pencils, a nail set, and a framing square like I was prepping for surgery. He had one pencil, a speed square, and his phone. At first I was annoyed but then I thought about how much of my older gear I keep out of habit. I still use a chalk line every day even though laser levels can do the job in half the time now. That kid snapped a few layout lines with a laser and it was dead on. I ended up borrowing his setup for the rest of the day and honestly it worked better for the task. So now I'm curious, has anyone else here dumped old tools just because some younger guy showed you a simpler way? Or am I just turning into the old timer I used to roll my eyes at?

Paid $200 for a speaking fee at a campus event and the school cancelled it over one angry tweet

I booked a small gig at a state college in Ohio, paid the $200 deposit out of pocket for travel gear, then they pulled the invite after a student group posted a clip of me saying something mildly edgy, has anyone else eaten a loss like that?

Just realized my campus had a 'speech zone' policy I never noticed

Used to think free speech was fine until I tried to hand out flyers for a film club near the student union and got told I had to be in a designated 10x10 spot behind the library. Three weeks later the Dean admitted they only created the zone after a conservative speaker got 500 signatures to come in 2022. Anyone else find out their school had hidden rules like this?

Had to choose between a $700 visa renewal or a $200 flight to nowhere

Back when I was in Nairobi on an expired permit, my buddy told me to just fly to Uganda for the weekend and come back fresh with a new stamp. I was broke so I went for the cheap option. Got stopped at JKIA, interrogated for 4 hours, and they sent me home with a 30 day notice. Should've just paid for the renewal. Anyone else gamble on a cheap fix and lose big?

$60 for a magnetic drain plug was stupid until I cut open my oil filter

Found four chunks of bearing material stuck to that magnet after 5,000 miles on my 2002 Miata, so I guess the $60 paid for itself, has anyone else gotten actual proof from one of these things?

Noticed everyone keeps calling open source AI 'not real AI' at my local tech meetup in Seattle

I was at a small tech meetup in Seattle last week and this guy kept saying open source models like Llama 3 are just toy projects compared to GPT-4. He said they can't handle real world tasks, which I thought was weird since I've been running a local Llama 3 70B model for my dental office scheduling for two months now. It handles appointment reminders, insurance code lookups, and even generates follow up emails without me paying per token. I get that OpenAI's stuff is polished but calling open source 'not real AI' just dismisses how fast things have moved since Meta released it in April. Has anyone else run into this gatekeeping attitude at industry events?
