Can we talk about hardwired vs wireless sensors and how I got burned on a 1920s house in Cleveland
Back in 2019 I took a job on a 1920s house in Cleveland and had to pick between running hardwired sensors through old plaster walls or going wireless for the whole thing. I went wireless because the homeowner did not want holes everywhere, and honestly it bit me about 14 months later when the battery on the back door sensor died at 2am and set off a false alarm while they were on vacation. Now I lean hardwired whenever there is any crawl space to work with, but I still think wireless has its place for finished basements. Anyone else run into a job where the wireless call came back to haunt you?
Ugh, this hits close to home. My buddy ran into almost the same thing on a flip in Parma a couple years back. He went all wireless to save time and the sellers were thrilled, no mess, no patching, all that. Fast forward a year and the new owners call him freaking out because a window sensor kept dropping off the hub and the alarm would not arm at night. Turns out the old plaster and lath plus some foil backing in the walls was killing the signal. He ended up eating the cost of pulling wire through the attic anyway, which was the whole thing he was trying to avoid. Now he refuses to do wireless on anything older than like 1980, period.
