That time I spent 3 winters chopping firewood the dumb way
So I've lived in Fairbanks for like 6 years now and every fall I'd go out with my splitting maul and just whale on these huge rounds for hours. My back was killing me, my shoulders were toast, and I'd go through maybe 15 cords a season feeling like a hero. Then last month my neighbor Dave, this old timer who's been here since the 80s, watched me for like 2 minutes and goes 'you know you're supposed to let the maul do the work, right? You're swinging it like a baseball bat.' He showed me how to aim for the cracks and let gravity and the weight of the head do most of it. I split a whole cord in half the time that afternoon with barely any effort. All those winters of me grunting and cussing for nothing. Has anyone else had a basic technique click for them way later than it should have, or am I just the slowest learner in Alaska?
