Tried fly fishing for grayling on the Chena last June and caught a pink salmon instead
I was casting egg patterns for grayling near the Chena Pump Road boat launch and hauled in a pink salmon 40 miles from saltwater, which the guy at the Fairbanks fly shop said happens maybe once every few seasons, so has anyone else pulled a surprise species out of an interior river?
Man that brings back memories! I fished the Chena hard for years when I was stationed at Wainwright and the weird stuff almost always shows up right below the pump road launch where that slough dumps in. My tip is to check the water temp and flow the day you hook something odd, because pinks and chums will push up a long way on a high water year and the timing lines up with when they get lost. Also keep a log of what you catch and where, since the Fairbanks shop guys eat that stuff up and it helps them tell the real strays from the ones people made up.
