I was wrong about xeriscaping after walking the Rio Grande Nature Center last Saturday
I always figured rock yards were just for people who hated plants, but the native beds there were packed with color and the whole thing needed zero sprinklers. The ranger said their water bill dropped about $90 a month after the switch, and now I'm eyeing my front lawn. Anybody here made the jump and regretted it?
Walked through that same place last spring and yeah the color surprised me too, but let's not pretend a nature center with staff and a drip system is the same as your average front yard. That $90 a month number gets tossed around a lot and nobody ever mentions the upfront cost of ripping out turf, hauling in gravel, and buying all those plants. Plus most rock yards I see around town are just bare gravel with three sad cactus and a plastic lizard. You can absolutely do it right, but it takes more work than chucking down some rocks and calling it xeriscaping.
