I finally gave in and watched Madoka Magica after years of ignoring it

Honestly I thought it was just another magical girl show for years. A friend in Minneapolis kept pushing it on me back in 2017 and I brushed it off. Then I saw a clip on YouTube that showed a character straight up dying in episode 3. That got my attention so I binged the whole series last weekend. The pacing and the way it flips your expectations is legit impressive. Has anyone else been wrong about a show they avoided for a long time?

That line about Kyubey seeing them as livestock that burns out really stuck with me too, but what got me is how the show never lets you forget that even in the "good" timelines, these girls are basically being used as disposable tools for a cosmic scam. It makes you wonder if any magical girl show where the girl gets a cute pet or a phone to transform is hiding the same dark truth underneath.

Watched it last year for the first time too and had the same reaction. The whole thing with Kyubey being this alien who just sees magical girls as livestock that burns out is brutal. It made me rethink every cutesy anime where some mysterious creature gives girls powers. Even the art style throws you off at first because it looks so innocent and then suddenly someone's head gets bitten off. Homura's time loop twist was the biggest gut punch for me because it explains her cold attitude right from episode 1. The show barely wastes a single scene which is rare for something that starts like a standard magical girl show.
