Subbed vs dubbed for mystery shows, I finally switched sides

I used to watch everything dubbed, but last month I tried a fansub of a mystery series and caught three clues the dub had smoothed over. The translator kept a pun in the dialogue that pointed to the killer, and the dub just made it sound like a joke. Now I check both versions for any show with plot twists, and the difference is bigger than I expected. Anyone else find dubbed versions miss little details that matter later?
