A retired climber's 2 word tip wrecked my whole rig approach

I was talking with this old timer, Ron from Eugene, at a local supply pickup and he watched me prep a 60 foot white oak. He just goes 'use friction' and walked off. I mean, I thought I was all about mechanical advantage with my pulleys and prusiks, but he made me realize I was fighting the tree instead of working with it. Anyone else have a random one liner from a veteran that made you totally redo your climbing setup?
