I finally get why everyone fusses over wood moisture

Tbh for the first 5 years climbing I never checked moisture content, just went off feel and look. Then last spring I helped a buddy drop a red oak that looked dry as a bone from the outside, but the center was still holding 30% plus. That log split like garbage and we lost half of it to checking and cracks. Now I carry a little pin meter in my saddle bag and check every stem over 12 inches before I make the call. It takes maybe 30 seconds but it changed how I bid firewood jobs completely. Anyone else trust the meter over their gut on this or am I being paranoid now?
