I finally stopped topping my maples and started doing proper crown reductions on them
A guy I work with in Boise kept telling me topping was fine for clearance over the driveway, and I did it that way on a big silver maple for 2 years. Last spring I hired a certified arborist to look at one of my topped trees and she showed me how the tree shot out 6 feet of weak uprights from every cut. That week I switched to crown reductions with proper cuts at the branch collar, and 14 months later the tree is holding a way better shape with almost no watersprouts. Anyone else made this switch and did your clients complain about the price jump at first?
