Just realized my climbing line was rubbing a stub I left on a red oak in Fairview
I was about 40 feet up a red oak off Fairview Road last Tuesday and heard a weird squeak every time I shifted weight. Turned out a 4 inch stub I left on the way up was sawing into my line, and I could see the sheath fuzzing already. Came down, re-tied a basal anchor, and cut every stub flush with a Silky before going back up. How often do you all re-inspect your line at the tie-in after a few limbs come off?
A squeak every time you moved is just the rope running over bark, that happens on every oak with rough bark. A little fuzz on the sheath is normal wear and doesn't mean the line is toast, you'd need to see core showing through before it's actually a problem. Flushing every stub is good practice but acting like one 4 inch stub nearly killed you seems like a stretch.
