Am I the only one who thinks the 'lost civilization' label gets slapped on everything now?
I volunteer at a small museum in Erie, Pennsylvania, mostly cataloging pottery sherds, and I keep seeing people online call any site older than 3,000 years a lost civilization. We had a guy on our tour a few weeks ago point at a Bronze Age bead and say it proved Atlantis, and I just stood there trying to explain that 40 beads in a trash pit is a normal Tuesday. The thing is, calling it lost does real harm, because it makes the actual research sound boring when it isn't. We know where these people lived, we know what they ate, we have their hearth ash and their worn down teeth. What gets me is that this stuff spreads on social media way faster than any of our site reports, so people come in expecting secret chambers and leave thinking we are hiding something. I want to know how other people here handle it when a visitor or a commenter brings up the lost civilization angle, do you correct them gently or just let it go?
