Question about that pottery shard I found last week

I brought a piece of pottery I dug up near my creek to the local museum and the curator told me I was cleaning it wrong. She said the sponge and dish soap I used was stripping off important residue that could tell them what was stored in it. Now I just brush off dry dirt with a soft toothbrush and leave the rest alone. Has anyone else gotten harsh feedback from an expert about their cleanup methods?

Seems a little overblown to me, but what do I know.

You ever see a situation that just kind of snowballs out of nowhere? I remember this one time my buddy convinced me to help him move a couch, and it ended up taking three hours because his neighbor kept coming over to give us advice on how to angle it through the door. Everyone had an opinion, you know? So maybe this thing you're talking about is like that couch, where people get caught up in the details and it seems bigger than it really is. But hey, that's just my take, probably doesn't mean much either.
