Visited Çatalhöyük and noticed the entryways are all in the roofs

I went to Çatalhöyük in Turkey two weeks ago, and something bugged me the whole time. Every house entrance is through the roof, no doors at ground level. One guide said it was for defense against enemies, the other guide said it was to keep trash and animals out. Which theory makes more sense to you based on the layout?

It's like how we still build houses with the garage as the main entrance most people actually use. The front door is for show, the garage door is where the real living happens. Roof entrances make sense if you think about it like that, just an old version of prioritizing the practical route over the decorative one. Plus, climbing a ladder every time you come home would definitely keep the neighbors from stopping by unannounced.

Ngl those roof entrances were for defense not convenience, ladders can be pulled up to keep attackers out.
