The guy at the DMV counter in Reno told me to just sit down and wait, and it stuck with me
I was at the DMV in Reno about 3 weeks ago to renew my license and the line was out the door. I finally get to the counter after waiting 90 minutes and this older guy behind it, maybe 60, looks at my paperwork and says, "You got the old form, hon. Go sit down, I'll call you when I find the new one." I was ready to argue because I'd printed it off their own website that morning. But he just waved me off and I sat. About 15 minutes later he calls my name, hands me the right form already filled out with my info, and says, "I keep a stack back here for people who print the wrong one." He'd been doing that for who knows how long and never mentioned it unless you were nice about it. I asked why he doesn't just put a sign up and he laughed and said, "Then everybody wants me to do it for them." I've thought about that a lot since. Has anyone else had a random worker just quietly fix something for you like that?
Oh man, that guy is a saint and also way smarter than me because I would have been the one printing the wrong form and then arguing about it for twenty minutes. I did that exact thing at the post office last year, waved my phone around like it proved something when the lady told me my label was expired. She just waited me out, then pulled a fresh one from a drawer and said nothing. I felt about two inches tall. There's something about someone quietly fixing your mess without making you feel dumb about it. That DMV guy earned his whole paycheck in fifteen minutes.
