Signed with a flat fee lawyer instead of hourly for my divorce

I paid $2,500 flat for my whole divorce case in Phoenix instead of $350 an hour. The flat fee lawyer handled everything without nickel and diming me for every email. Has anyone else gone flat fee and regretted it when things got complicated?

Huh, that is interesting. Did the flat fee lawyer stop working on stuff once the case got messy or did they actually follow through?

Oh man, I've seen this play out before and it's usually a mixed bag (like most things in law, honestly). My buddy had a similar flat fee setup and the lawyer bailed as soon as the other side started fighting back on every little thing, so he ended up paying extra to get someone else to finish it. But I've also heard stories where the flat fee lawyer stuck it out and did the whole thing, just because they knew the case was simple enough from the start. So @johnthompson, I'd say it really depends on how upfront the lawyer was about what "messy" meant in the fee agreement, you know?
