Hot take: Our student group at UC Berkeley invited a speaker and the admin shut it down an hour before

We had Dr. Liana Kerr set to talk about campus free speech. Security showed up and said the room permit was revoked. They claimed we didn't file a form, but we had the email confirmation. The whole thing got canceled. Anyone dealt with a last minute admin block like this?

Showerthought: I just looked up how much some of these canceled speakers get paid anyway

I was reading an article from the Chronicle of Higher Ed about a speaker who got disinvited from a state school in Ohio. The part that got me was the fee they were still owed. The contract had a 'kill fee' clause, so even though the event was called off after student protests, the speaker's agency still got 50% of the $20,000 fee. The college had to pay ten grand for a talk that never happened. I always figured if you cancel, you just don't pay. But these contracts are ironclad. It made me wonder how much money colleges waste on these sunk costs every year, all while tuition goes up. Does anyone know if there's a push for schools to stop signing contracts with those kinds of terms?

Serious question, I dropped $1200 on a 'nomad health insurance' plan and it's been useless.

It doesn't cover basic urgent care visits in most of the countries I've been in, only major emergencies. Has anyone found a plan that actually works for regular doctor stuff across Europe and Asia?

Shoutout to a documentary that showed me how many books are banned in US schools now

I found a list from PEN America showing over 3,000 book bans in the last school year, which changed my view that this was just a few local issues. Anyone have a good source for tracking similar censorship in other places?

Heard a new guy call a 66 block 'ancient tech' and it took me back to my first year in the trade.

Finally gave up on my old paint roller and tried a new kind

I was painting my kitchen cabinets in my apartment and kept getting tiny bubbles and lint in the finish with my old cheap roller. My friend lent me a 4 inch foam roller she got from the hardware store, and the difference was huge. The foam gave a super smooth coat with no texture, and I didn't have to sand between coats. Has anyone else found a simple tool change that made a big difference in a paint job?

My old boss made us use a password manager, but my new one just tells us to 'make them strong'.

At my last job in Chicago, they forced us to use a password manager like Bitwarden for everything. I hated it at first, but after six months, I saw the point. Every site had a unique, long password, and I only had to remember one master phrase. Now I'm at a new place where the policy is just 'use strong passwords' and write them down if you have to. It's a mess. People reuse the same password with a number change, and I've already seen two sticky notes with logins stuck to monitors. The manager approach cuts out human error in a way a vague rule never can. Has anyone else had to push back on a weak company password policy?

My buddy in Austin said my brisket bark was 'sandy' and it changed my whole cook

He told me my rub was too fine and the sugar was burning, so I started grinding my pepper coarse and using less brown sugar. Now my bark sets up way better and has a real bite to it. What's one piece of feedback that totally flipped your method?
