Got told my Andromeda shot was fake because I used a $200 camera, and I nearly lost it
Someone at my local astronomy club meetup in Boise last month looked at my print of Andromeda and said right to my face, "that's fake, you can't get that with a cheap setup." I shot it with a used Canon T3i I got for $200 and a 135mm lens I borrowed from a friend. It's 47 stacked frames, 90 seconds each, from a dark site about an hour outside the city. The thing that bugs me is this gatekeeping idea that you need $3,000 of gear to get a decent galaxy photo. Light pollution, stacking, and patience matter way more than the price tag on your mount. The photo is on my wall, it's real, and I took every sub myself over 4 nights in October. If someone thinks price equals skill in this hobby, I want to hear how they'd explain my image then.
