Chose a strict routine over natural flexibility for my son's meals

I picked a rigid 7 AM breakfast schedule with exactly the same 3 safe foods every day instead of letting him eat when hungry, and after 6 months he's gained 4 pounds and stopped having meltdowns at the table, has anyone else found structure beating choice for picky eating?

Yeah cause nothing says "I love you" like turning breakfast into a prison shift with a rotating menu of three items. Real freedom's overrated anyway.

I used to be all about letting kids just figure out their own eating patterns, like letting them listen to their bodies and all that, but man, seeing this makes me rethink everything. My nephew was the same way with meltdowns at dinner and we tried all the "natural" stuff for months with zero progress. Some kids really do need that rigid structure to feel safe and actually eat, not having to make decisions all the time. It's kind of wild how a boring routine can be the thing that finally works when choice just makes them anxious.
