My old boss at the call center said to stop scripting my calls with my son's therapist, and she was right
So for 8 months I was reading the therapist's exact phrases off a sticky note during meltdowns at our kitchen table in Boise, until Dave from work said that sounds like you're running a help desk ticket on your own kid, and when I finally tried just saying 'I see you're upset' in my own dumb words instead, he calmed down in 4 minutes instead of 40, so has anyone else had a script backfire like that?
Scripts can still work if you make them your own instead of reading them word for word off a note. My guess is the problem wasnt the words themselves, it was that you were saying somebody else's words in a voice that wasnt yours, and kids can smell that a mile away. Try keeping a few phrases that feel natural in your mouth and toss the rest, since a script you actually believe beats one you're just reciting.
