Vent: nobody warned me that getting my son an IEP would take 7 months

Everyone online said the school would handle it once we asked, so I figured maybe 6 weeks max. It took 7 months, 4 meetings, and one 11 page letter from an advocate in Sacramento just to get the eval started. The thing that finally moved it was me showing up in person with a printed log of every email and every date they missed. People keep saying the system works if you stay calm and patient, but being calm and patient was exactly what kept us stuck. So what actually got your school to move, because I'm not sure patience is the answer here.

Schools do respond to paper trails, but the log was not what moved them. Districts count on parents giving up, and showing up with dates just proves you won't. The thing that actually gets action is a written request for evaluation sent certified mail, because the clock starts on their legal deadline the day it arrives, not the day you first asked at a meeting.
