Hot take: I saw a 2008 F-150 go from a total loss to a show truck in under a year
A guy in my shop bought it for $800 from a salvage auction with a crushed cab and frame damage. He spent about 15k on parts and 9 months of nights and weekends doing a full frame swap and custom paint. What's the biggest 'rescue' project you've seen actually get finished?

Sounds like a huge waste of money and time for an old truck. Most of those projects just end up as half-finished junk.

But have you actually seen a finished one, @ray_morgan? The whole point is bringing something back that was headed for the scrap yard. Sure, some projects stall, but calling it junk ignores the skill people learn and the history they save. It's not about making a profit, it's about the work itself. Dismissing all of them feels like missing why people even start.

Look at how many kids get into fixing cars because of a project like this. That old truck in the driveway is a classroom. Maybe @ray_morgan sees a pile of parts, but someone else is learning patience and how an engine works. Those skills stick with you for life, even if the truck doesn't get painted. Isn't that worth something more than just the finished product?
