The painter who told me I'm wasting my time on perfect prep

I was talking to this 60 year old painter from Cleveland at a PPG distributor last month and he said my 3 hour sanding pass on a daily driver was crazy, that OEM plastic doesn't care about 220 vs 320 before sealer. He claimed the adhesion tests all pass either way and I've been losing 2 hours a day on base coat work since then. Is he just old school lazy or is there actual science behind skipping the extra prep on non-structural panels?
