Just realized most car guys don't actually know how to read a spark plug...

Overheard two guys at a Cars & Coffee last Saturday arguing about rich vs lean conditions from a photo and neither one had ever pulled a plug to actually check, so maybe we should all step back before acting like experts.

Three years as a flat rate tech and I've probably pulled a thousand spark plugs. Still shocks me how many people can talk about AFRs and timing curves but wouldn't know a wet fouled plug if it hit them in the face. You want real car knowledge, go find the guy with grease under his nails and a plug reading chart stuffed in his toolbox.

100% agree with the "grease under his nails" part from @andrewt41. That's the real litmus test. So heres my question for all the guys who can recite injector duty cycles but cant read a ground electrode - have you ever actually toasted a plug to the point where the color was gone and you had to guess based on deposits instead? Cause that's where the real learning happens.
