That ignition coil job turned into a 14 hour nightmare last Saturday
Customer rolls in with a 2014 Focus misfiring on cylinder 3. Simple coil swap right? Pull the bolt, pop the coil, done in 20 minutes. Except the LAST tech who touched it used red loctite on the hold down bolt and WELDED the coil pack onto the plug with corrosion. 45 minutes of prying and swearing just to get the thing out. Then the new coil goes in, still misfiring. Turns out the plug was cracked underneath and the boot was shredded. Another hour to fish out the pieces with a telescoping magnet. By the time I got the replacement plug in and cleared the codes it was dark outside. Charged the guy 2 hours of labor but actually worked 4. Has anyone dealt with those Focus coil packs fusing to the plugs like that? What do you do different to prevent the customer coming back a week later when the same thing happens on cylinder 2?
Red loctite on a coil bolt is straight up evil, who does that to the next guy. The Focus coil packs do fuse on there pretty bad when the plug wells get water in them and rust things up. Best thing you can do is pull all four coils while you're in there and check every plug, saves the customer a trip back and saves you the headache.
