Spent 6 hours trying to match a single panel of silver paint

I had a 2018 Honda Accord come in last week with a rear door scuff. Mixed up my usual Honda silver, sprayed a test card, and it was way off. Ended up making four different mixing cups before I got close, then had to adjust the blend with a few drops of black and white. What should have been a 2 hour job turned into almost a full day. Anybody else find certain silver shades are just a nightmare to match on these newer cars?

Blew a vacuum line on a job site in Dearborn and had to rig it on the fly

I was working on a set of prints for a 3-story apartment building in Dearborn last Tuesday and my vacuum pump started losing draw mid-run. Turns out one of the hoses got a pinhole leak from dragging it over a sharp edge on a steel beam. I patched it with electrical tape and a zip tie to finish the job, but it dropped my pull time by about 15 minutes. Has anyone else had to jury-rig a vacuum setup on site or do you always keep spare hoses in your truck?

Just found out that 90% of the peat moss sold in garden centers comes from bogs that take 1,000 years to form

I was reading a report from the Royal Horticultural Society and it said harvesting peat releases carbon that's been locked up for millennia, so I'm switching to coir or composted bark starting this spring - anyone else ditch peat moss yet?

That time I got banned from a gardening forum for 'bad advice' on tomato pruning

Tbh I was giving people tips for years on how to trim tomato plants. I always cut off all the suckers thinking it made the plant grow bigger fruit. Last week I posted a photo of my 3 foot tall plant with 5 tomatoes on it and some guy named Dave in Ohio commented saying I was stunting the root growth and should leave the bottom suckers. He linked a study from a university extension program from 2018. I went back and checked like 40 old posts of mine where I swore by this method. I feel like an idiot honestly. Has anyone else had to eat crow after years of giving bad advice?

Vent: Chased a ground fault for 6 hours on a King Air 200

Worked a King Air 200 last Tuesday. Pilot said the nav lights were flickering. Thought it would be a quick fix. Checked every bulb, every connector, every breaker. Nothing. Spent the whole afternoon tracing wires in the tail cone. Finally found it at 5 PM. A single chafed wire behind a panel near the aft equipment bay. Barely visible. Took me 6 hours total. All for a 10 minute fix once I saw it. Anyone else spend way too long on something that should have been obvious?

Never believed in MSG hype until my aunt's kitchen in Guangzhou

I used to think MSG was just some fake chemical nonsense that gave you headaches. Then my aunt in Guangzhou cooked me a simple bok choy stir fry with a pinch of it and the taste was completely different - way more savory and round. Has anyone else had their mind changed about MSG after actually trying it?

Reached 50 people in my encrypted group chat and suddenly got nervous

I run a small Signal group for activists in my city, mostly people organizing around tenant rights. Last week we hit 50 members, which felt like a big milestone but also spooked me. I started this group 6 months ago with just 3 people I knew from a local meeting, and it grew by word of mouth. Now I worry about who is actually in here. 50 people means someone could be a plant or just not careful with their opsec. I had to spend a whole afternoon updating the pinned messages about basic encryption settings and reminding everyone to turn off message previews on their lock screen. Has anyone else had a group get big enough that you started questioning your own security rules?

Tried taping my splices at a 45-degree angle on a big piping project last week

I always just did straight tape wraps, but angling it actually kept the tape from peeling up when I rolled the drawing. Has anyone else found a weird little adjustment like that which saved them time?

Just finished 'The Martian' and I liked the book way more than the movie

I finally read 'The Martian' after watching the movie a few years back. My book club mostly said the film did it better because of the visuals and Matt Damon's acting. But I read the book last month and the step-by-step problem solving on page 147 about the potato farm was way more gripping than the movie scene. The book makes you feel his isolation with all those log entries, while the movie rushes through the science to get to the action. Has anyone else here felt the book version beats out a popular adaptation for the same reasons?

Customer said my pork chops looked like shoe leather

Guy comes up to my counter last Saturday. Points at a tray of my center-cut chops. Says they looked dry and tough. I was mad at first. Then I looked closer. He was right. I was trimming too much fat off. Kept the cap but cut the rest too close. Now I leave a solid 1/4 inch of fat on the edge. Chops stay juicy. Nobody's complained since. What's your biggest customer complaint that actually helped you?
