Bought a $600 test set that never worked out of the box

Picked up a refurbished IFR 4000 from a dealer in Phoenix last spring. First power up threw a synth unlock error every time we tried to run a ramp check. Dealer said it was bench tested before shipping but refused to cover the repair since I'd had it for 11 days past their return window. I ended up spending another $400 at a local avionics shop just to get a diagnosis on a board that had a cracked solder joint. Anyone else get burned on refurbished test gear and find a better source for used equipment?
