Dropped $90 on a bear canister for the Sierra and the rental would've cost $12
Bought a BearVault BV500 for my 6 day trip through the Rae Lakes loop last month because the ranger at the permit office made it sound like rentals were a nightmare. Got to the trailhead in Onion Valley and the little shop there rents them for twelve bucks with a deposit. Carried 2.5 lbs of plastic for nothing and now it just sits in my garage. Anyone actually had a ranger check their canister, or is this whole thing overblown?
Not sure the Rae Lakes loop is where you'd get checked much since everyone and their mom does that route, but the rangers do check in a lot of places. Onion Valley to Whitney is different, they hang out at the portal and ask to see your canister before you head up. Same with Yosemite, I've been asked twice in the backcountry there. The $90 stings now but you'll use it again and rentals are not always around when you need one, that shop in Onion Valley closes early in the season. Hang onto it, you'll get your money's worth eventually.
