Just realized the radiation scene in that Chernobyl show got me reading for 3 hours straight
So last Tuesday I was rewatching that HBO Chernobyl show and the scene where the firefighters pick up the graphite chunks got me curious, so I looked up what actually happens when you touch reactor core material. Turns out those guys got doses around 10,000 to 16,000 roentgen and were dead within weeks, which the show mostly got right, but the whole "your skin falls off if you touch it" thing is way more about acute radiation sickness than the touching itself. What really got me was the bridge scene, because people standing a mile away from the reactor would've been fine, that part is pure fiction. I spent the rest of the night on Wikipedia and now I can't tell if knowing the real science makes the show better or worse. Does anyone else go down these rabbit holes after a single scene, or is it just me?
