That time my sourdough starter exploded at 3 AM in Cleveland

I keep my starter in a big mason jar with a loose lid on the counter. Around 2 AM last Tuesday I heard this pop and then glass hit the floor. The thing had fermented so fast it blew the lid off and sprayed sticky bubbly goo all over my cabinets. Now I put it in a bigger bowl with a towel on top, especially in warm weather. Anyone else had a starter go rogue like that?

and yeah @alex524 is totally right, that midnight surprise is no joke. i switched to a big plastic container with a loose lid and it still managed to push the lid off and dribble down the sides. now i just use a big bowl with a cloth and a rubber band, way less cleanup when it decides to go crazy on a warm night. the explosion thing is real though, i had to repaint a whole cabinet section after mine went off like a sticky bomb. for real, if you ever see bubbles forming faster than usual just move it somewhere you don't mind getting messy.

Used to think loose lids were fine till mine shot starter across my kitchen at midnight.
