Substitute teacher banned 'y'all' and my class rebelled
Honestly, I didnt expect a single word to cause that much chaos. I subbed for a 7th grade class in Austin last month and the regular teacher left a note saying 'y'all' was banned due to a parent complaint about informal speech. So I tried enforcing it, and the kids just stopped participating. Theyd raise their hands, then freeze and whisper 'can I say this or that other word' for like 2 minutes. After 3 tries of correcting them, I realized the rule was doing way more harm than good. I quietly dropped the ban by lunch and the class opened right back up. Ngl, it made me wonder if some schools ban words just to look strict without thinking about how it kills conversation. Has anyone else seen a silly language ban backfire like that?
Did you ever have a teacher who banned a word just because it annoyed them personally? My 8th grade english teacher hated the word "like" so much she made us pay a dime every time we said it, and by friday we owed her like twelve dollars.
