About 8 years ago I was working a job in Tulsa with a guy who'd been laying brick since the 70s. He saw me putting a thick layer of mortar on every single brick before setting it and told me I was wasting time and material. I laughed it off because I thought he was just old fashioned and slow. Then after three days of watching me struggle to keep a consistent line he finally pulled me aside and showed me his method. He just dabbed the corners and let the trowel do the work. I tried it on the next wall and cut my time by almost a third. Now I see new guys doing the same thing I used to do and I want to tell them but nobody listens to advice from a stranger. Has anyone else had a seasoned bricklayer call them out on a bad habit?

Rant: Spent $60 on a fountain pen and it wrecked my bujo flow

I thought dropping $60 on a fancy fountain pen would make my spreads look amazing. Instead, it bled right through my Leuchtturm pages and smudged every time I closed the notebook. Now I'm stuck with a pen I'm scared to use and a half-ruined monthly log. Has anyone else had a pricey pen totally backfire like this? What cheap pens actually work for you?

Forgot to check my bevel angles before a big weld in Baton Rouge

Was working on a pressure vessel job last month outside Baton Rouge and laid out a full pass without checking my bevel angles first. The fit-up was off by nearly 3 degrees and I had to grind back almost 2 inches of weld to fix it. Lost half a day and the foreman chewed me out in front of the whole crew. Has anyone else had a fit-up go sideways because they skipped the pre-weld check?

So Monday I tried making chocolate chip cookies and they spread into one giant pancake. Tuesday I adjusted the flour and got hockey pucks. Wednesday I thought I nailed it but they crumbled apart when I picked one up. Three batches, three fails, all from the same recipe I've used for years. Bought a $30 Chinese tea set online and it's way better than I expected

I saw this porcelain gaiwan and cup set on a random site for about 200 yuan. Figured it would be cheap and thin, but it arrived last week and the quality is solid. The glaze is smooth, the lid fits perfectly, and it pours without dripping. I've been using it every morning for oolong and it actually makes the tea taste cleaner.
