Everyone says to pay yourself first, but my paycheck was gone by the 3rd every month
I used to set up that automatic transfer to savings on payday like everyone says, and then I would just pull it right back out by the 12th. This went on for two years until my card got declined at a Kroger in Columbus for a $4.19 coffee creamer. That was the moment it hit me, I was not saving anything, I was just moving money around and lying to myself with a nicer app screen. What actually worked was flipping it. I started paying every bill the day the check hit, rent, electric, insurance, all of it, then whatever was left got moved to savings and I lived off almost nothing for two weeks. Sounds backwards, and my brother told me it was stupid, but I have not touched that savings account since March and there is $2,340 sitting in it. Turns out the trick was never about willpower, it was about hiding the money before I could see it. Anyone else ditch the pay yourself first thing and go the other way?
