My friend swore by using a separate checking account for bills

He told me to open a second account at my bank just for fixed costs like rent and utilities. Said it would stop me from overspending. I tried it for six months with my credit union in Phoenix. Set up auto transfers every payday. Honestly, it was a game changer. I never had a late payment and always knew exactly what was left for fun stuff. The mental separation made budgeting feel automatic. Anyone else use this method or have a different system that works for them?

I started with a separate savings account for my car payment after reading a tip from @the_alex. Moving that money out of sight each month made it feel like the bill was already paid. Now I use the same method for my whole rent and utilities budget.

Honestly, the separate account thing saved me when my car insurance went up last month. The bill just came out of that account like normal, and I didn't have to scramble or cut back on groceries. It turns surprise costs into non-events. Before this, a bigger utility bill in summer would wreck my whole spending plan. Now that money is just already gone from my main view, so I can't accidentally spend it.

My old system was just a single checking account with a rough budget in my head. I had to move money around every time the water bill spiked in August. Seeing how you handle car insurance makes me want to try the separate account method for real.
