PSA: I switched from checks to Zelle after waiting 9 days for $1,200 to clear
Two years ago I wrote a check for $1,200 to my contractor in Phoenix and it took 9 days before the money left my account, so I was sweating the whole time wondering if it would bounce. Now I just send it with Zelle and he gets it in about 30 seconds, which honestly still feels a little weird to me. The part that got me was my credit union charging me $28 for a stop payment on a check I mailed to the wrong address, and Zelle has never cost me a dime. Last week my landlord asked for a check and I talked him into Zelle instead, and he texted back 'that was fast' in all caps. Has anyone here had a bank freeze a Zelle transfer for no clear reason, or am I just lucky so far?
Wait, so the check took 9 days to clear but your credit union still hit you with a $28 stop payment fee on top of that? That part bugs me more than the Zelle thing honestly. My bank did something similar last year, charged me $30 to stop a check I realized I sent to the wrong apartment number, and then the guy cashed it anyway because the stop went through too late. Did your credit union refund that fee or were you just stuck eating it?
