A neighbor in Boise saw me reading 'The Bluest Eye' and told me it was 'garbage' that shouldn't be in schools.
He said it right there on my porch last Tuesday, and it made me wonder what exactly he was so afraid of in that book. Has anyone else had a casual conversation turn into a surprising defense of censorship?

Maybe he just wants to protect kids from heavy stuff.

I get wanting to shield them, but I found my kids handled tough topics better when I was honest in small doses. When our dog died, I just said he was very old and his body stopped working, and we were sad. That simple truth felt better than making up a story. It built trust for harder talks later.
