Our team read a challenged graphic novel and it opened up tough talks

My job has a monthly book thing to build skills. Last month, someone picked 'Maus' because it's been banned in schools. We ended up discussing why stories about hard history get pushed aside. Now I always suggest books that face censorship for our reads. It helps us think about what we miss when voices are quiet.

But is it actually that big of a deal? Sometimes I wonder if we make too much of this stuff. People have always skipped over the rough parts of history because it's just plain uncomfortable. Maybe they're not trying to hide anything, they just don't want to feel bad. It doesn't mean we're missing some huge lesson, it might just mean we'd rather think about today.

What makes us look away from hard history?
