Spent $45 on a 'clean' edition of a banned book that cut out all the good parts

I bought a copy of 'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian' online, and the description said it was a 'school edition'. Turns out, it was heavily edited, removing whole chapters about poverty and race that are central to the story. Has anyone else been tricked by these sanitized versions of banned books?

Guess they wanted to protect you from the whole point of the book.

Wait, they actually cut the poverty stuff from the book? @baker.ben I totally agree with you, that's such a big part of the whole story. It's like they're trying to make it more comfortable but totally miss the point the author was making. The whole reason the book works is because it shows how being poor changes everything about your life. I remember reading that part and it really stuck with me, how the author talks about not having enough and how it wears you down. It just feels wrong to take that out, like they're cleaning up the truth to make it easier to swallow.
