Showerthought: a mod in a local politics forum told me to stop posting links without my own words and it fixed everything
Got a 7 day mute on a city forum in Rochester last year for dropping bare news links about a zoning vote with zero comment of my own. The mod wrote, "you're not talking, you're just dumping." At first I was mad, but then I read my old posts and yeah, they were just link soup with no point. So now I write two or three sentences of my own first, then the link, and I haven't gotten a single warning in 8 months. Turns out a lot of mods don't hate your opinion, they hate feeling like a human RSS feed. Has anyone else gotten feedback like that and actually changed how they post?
you're not talking, you're just dumping" is exactly what I got told too, back when I was on a fishing forum of all places. The mod there said my posts read like a bot scraping headlines. So I started adding maybe two sentences about why the thing mattered to me before pasting anything, and the warnings stopped right away. It's weird how just typing "here's why this got my attention" changes how people read the link.
