That $300 HOA fine for a garden sign that wasn't even political

I put up a little sign in my front yard last month that just said "Ask me about native plants" with my number, trying to get neighbors into drought-friendly yards. The HOA hit me with a $300 fine saying it was "commercial advertising" and then banned me from the next two meetings when I argued it wasn't. Has anyone else gotten slapped with fines for stuff that's barely even breaking a real rule?

Check your CC&Rs for the exact wording on "signs" and "commercial activity" because most HOAs don't define a phone number as advertising if no product is being sold. I had the same fight over a little free library sign and won by citing the specific page and paragraph.

Wait, isn't that kind of specific to each HOA though? I mean, mine defines pretty much anything on the property as a sign if it has words on it, even if nothing's for sale. Maybe it's just me but I'd double check that page and paragraph actually covers that exact phone number scenario, cause some boards get real creative with what counts as "commercial activity.
