Watched my comment get eaten on a news site, then saw the same site go from 400 comments to 12 in two weeks
So I used to comment on this regional news site out of Rochester, nothing wild, mostly stuff about potholes and the school board budget. Back in March I wrote a comment saying the new zoning plan would push rent up near the lake, and it posted fine. Two weeks later I tried to reply to a guy about the same topic and got hit with a "your comment is awaiting review" note, and it never showed up. After that I started watching the comment sections and they flat out died. Threads that used to pull 300 or 400 replies in a single afternoon now sit at 8 or 10, and half of those are just people asking why nobody is talking. I checked the count on their own most-commented story from January versus the same kind of story in April, and it went from 412 down to 17. Nothing changed about the news, the town is still arguing about the same stuff, the only thing that changed is that a filter got turned on and people gave up. Has anyone else seen a site's comment section just quietly empty out like that, or did they all move somewhere I don't know about?
