Rant: found out a meme about a sinking boat got 47 countries to block it in one week
I was digging around on the Stanford Internet Observatory site last night and stumbled on a case study that kinda blew my mind. Apparently a single meme about a boat full of politicians sinking got flagged and taken down in 47 countries inside of 7 days back in 2023. What got me was how the exact same image was legal in some places and a fine or even jail time in others. I always figured bans were country by country and slow, but this thing spread faster than the meme itself did. It made me realize the rules are less about the joke and more about who the joke is aimed at. Has anyone else seen a case where one image got treated totally different depending on where you posted it?
