inThought cheap knives were fine until I spent $150 on one good chef's knife
Man, you just reminded me of the time I argued with a pastry chef that you can sharpen a dollar store pairing knife just as good as a Wusthof. That went about as well as you'd expect. She handed me her knife, I tried it, and my pride took a serious hit. Never said a word about cheap knives again but I did quietly save up for a good one. Now I get it, that first cut with a proper blade is like driving a car that actually turns when you move the wheel. Still hurts my wallet thinking about it though.

inMy first landlord said never trust a washer that hums on spin cycle
Isn't a hum usually a sign you caught it early enough to maybe save the thing? That growl before the belt snapped sounds like it was already on its way out, but a hum can be a worn bearing that still has some life left if you act fast. I'd say it's worth opening it up and checking before you just toss it, a bearing is a lot cheaper than a whole new machine.

inMy telescope mount gave up mid-photo last night
Have you tried annealing the PLA after printing to make it stronger?

inPulled a giant white oak down last Wednesday and the hinge broke too early
Oh man, that's a scary situation. A 30 inch oak coming down wrong is nothing to mess with, glad you're okay. Sometimes those big oaks can have hidden cracks or rot deep inside that you just can't see until it's too late.

inTried running Facebook ads for my shop on Gratiot and got zero sales after spending $150
honestly your point about "vanity metrics" really hit home for me lol. I used to get so hyped about post engagement until I realized none of those likes ever walked through my door. the specific offer idea is smart too. I did something similar with my own business last year, just a simple "mention this post for a free diagnostic" and it was way easier to tell what was actually working vs what just looked good on paper. sometimes you gotta trick yourself into tracking stuff properly lol.
