My campus talk about free speech got 500 signatures of support

I was trying to organize a small discussion on free speech at my old college, and the student union said it was 'too divisive' and blocked the room booking. I put up a petition online just to see if anyone cared, and it hit 500 signatures in two days, mostly from students. Has anyone else had a simple event shut down but then found a lot of quiet support?

Reminds me of when our book club got labeled a 'disturbance' for picking a political memoir. The quietest people in the group were the ones who got most upset about the shut down, which really showed where the support was. It's funny how trying to stop a talk can make people want to hear it more.

Yeah, it's like what @palmer.zara said, trying to shut stuff down always backfires. I see it everywhere now, people just want normal talks without all the drama.
