My old way of making soup was basically just throwing stuff in a pot

I used to think a good soup needed a ton of fresh veggies and a fancy broth, which added up fast. About three months ago, I started saving all my veggie scraps like onion skins, carrot ends, and celery leaves in a freezer bag. Once the bag is full, I boil them for an hour to make a free stock that tastes way better than store-bought. Now my lentil soup costs maybe $2 for the whole pot instead of $8. Has anyone else tried this scrap stock trick, or do you have a different way to cut the cost of soup?

Was sure the new 'smart' bucket teeth were just a gimmick, but they saved my pump on the Lake Erie project last week.

Our company got a demo set of those sensor-equipped teeth that are supposed to alert you to abnormal wear. I figured it was just a way to charge more for a basic part. We put them on the cutterhead for a channel deepening job near Cleveland. The monitoring app pinged me on Wednesday with a high vibration alert on tooth #7. I pulled it, and the base was hairline cracked, right where it seats. If that had let go completely, it would've chewed up the suction line and cost us a full day, easy. The foreman who pushed for them just nodded and said 'told you so.' Has anyone else run into a situation where a piece of tech you doubted actually paid off?

Appreciation post: A library in Portland had a whole display explaining why certain memes get flagged

I was there last week and they had printouts of six different image macros with notes about which platforms removed them and why, which made me realize most people just get mad without checking the actual community guidelines first. They even had a side-by-side showing the same joke with slightly different text that got left up, proving it's often about specific wording, not the whole idea. Has anyone else seen a public place trying to explain content moderation like that?

Remember when you could fix a TV with just a soldering iron and a schematic?

I pulled apart a 10 year old LCD monitor last week to fix a backlight issue, and the main board was just one sealed unit. No caps to swap, no individual regulators, just a single board you replace entirely. Back in my dad's shop in the 90s, we'd fix a CRT by testing a handful of parts on an open chassis. The shift from component-level repair to board swaps really hit me. It feels like half the job now is just finding the right replacement module online. Has anyone found a good source for board-level schematics on newer stuff, or is that knowledge just fading out?

Found a strange writing prompt notebook in a coffee shop in Portland

I was at a place called The Daily Grind on 3rd Avenue yesterday and saw a notebook left on a table. It was full of writing prompts, but the weird part was every single one was about doors that shouldn't be opened. Like, 'You find a door in your basement that wasn't there yesterday' or 'A door appears every time you tell a lie'. There were over 50 of them, all just about doors. It felt like someone's very specific obsession. Has anyone else found a prompt collection that was stuck on one idea like that? I'm curious if it's a common exercise.

Shoutout to the giant bag of dried beans I bought in 2021 that just gave me a final, surprisingly good chili last night.

I finally used the last of them, and I mean, after three years in a jar in my pantry, I was fully prepared for a bland, rock-hard disaster, but it turned out totally fine and fed me for like $0.50 a bowl.

Used to think a 4-inch roller was fine for glue-down LVP, but a 6-inch changed my whole week

Had a 1200 sq ft job in a new condo building last week, same plank, same adhesive. First day I used my usual 4-inch roller and it felt slow, my arm was tired by lunch. Next morning I grabbed the 6-inch roller from my truck just to see. Covered the floor way faster, the adhesive spread more even with less ridges. Finished the job a full half-day early. Anyone else find a bigger roller makes that much difference on big glue-down jobs?

I used to do quick 15-minute skin consults to fit more people in, but after a client in my Denver studio had a bad reaction to a product I suggested (based on that short chat), I switched to a full 30 minutes. The extra time lets me really look at their skin under the magnifying lamp, ask about their full routine, and even talk about stress or diet. Last week, a new client mentioned a medication she'd been on for 6 months that she forgot to tell me about in a rush, which totally changed my treatment plan. That never would have come up in the old format. The longer consult builds way more trust and stops problems before they start. Shoutout to the guy who swore by the vinegar trick for noisy washer pumps

I had this old Whirlpool front loader making a crazy grinding sound for weeks, and a tech I met at a supply house in Tacoma said to just run a full hot cycle with two cups of white vinegar. I was totally sure it was the pump bearing and he was wasting my time. Tried it yesterday as a last shot before ordering the part, and the noise is GONE. Saved me the $120 for the pump and an hour of my Saturday. Has anyone else had a simple fix work when you were sure it needed a big repair?
